Hidradenitis Suppurativa Symptoms

The symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa vary from person to person and depend on the clinical stage of progression the person is in.  There are three clinical stages of hidradenitis suppurativa:

  • Stage 1:  One or more abscesses form without sinus tracts and scar formation.  Dictionary.com defines abscesses as a localized collection of pus in part of the body, formed by tissue disintegration and surrounded by an inflamed area.

  • Stage 2:  Recurrent abscesses with sinus tract formation and scar formation

  • Stage 3:  Spreading of tracts abscesses over the body.


The most common and noticeable symptom of hidradenitis suppurativa are boils on the skin.  The boils can be as minor as a blackheads or pimples and as serious as large puss-draining masses the size of golf balls.

Hidradenitis suppurativa boils are most commonly discovered on the inner thighs, buttox, genitals, under the breasts of women, and under the arm pits.  They can also be found along the hair line and behind the ears.

It is important to mention the presence of boils does not automatically indicate that you have hidradenitis suppurativa.  There are various medical conditions that include this symptom.  Therfore, if you suspect a problem, you should visit a doctor for an official diagnosis.

It is recommended that you visit a medical practitioner, such as a dermatologist, if you observe more than 3 boils in any one year as this is a strong symptom of hidradenitis suppurativa.
