Hidradenitis Suppurativa

What Is Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Hidradenitis Suppurativa, also referred to as HS, is a chronic skin condition, caused by a defect in the apocrine glands.  The disease affects the inward areas of the skin, leaving sinus tracts in areas such as the inner thighs, arm pits, and private parts.  The infection is not contagious, and therefore, can not be transmitted or passed along to others through direct or indirect contact.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa was previously thought to occur when apocrine gland outlets became blocked by perspiration and unable to drain properly due to incomplete gland development; however, more recent findings trace the cause more specifically to follicular occlusion, or in more simpler terms, the blocking of apocrine gland follicles.

The blocking of the follicles inevitably leads to the blocking of the apocrine glands themselves, which is why hidradenitis suppurativa is confined to areas of the body that contain apocrine glands.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa is characterized by infected areas of the skin which become painful and swollen when inflamed.  At some point, swelling may be deflated by the draining of foul smelling puss from the infected area.

Based on limited research, there are increased cases of hidradenitis suppurativa in women, people of African decent, people who are over weight, and smokers.  It is also a known hereditary trait among some sufferers.

Stress, heat, friction, and perspiration are all known to agitate the syptoms of those suffering from hidradenitis suppurativa creating additional strain to an already painful condition.

Hidradenitis suppurativa can be extremely painful, but is not deadly, except in cases where one's immune system is inadequate.  For example, Hidradenitis suppurativa can cause death in people with AIDs.

Because the apocrine glands are not active before puberty, Hidradenitis suppurativa can only develop in people who have reached the stage of puberty.  In other words, hidradenitis suppurativa can not develop in babies and young children.

In many Hidradenitis suppurativa patients, in particularly those with severe cases, the condition creates significant psychological problems.  It has been reported that as many as 80% of HS sufferers are diagnosed as clinically depressed.
